Giclee Reproduction Process: Step-by-Step

CONSULTING PROCESS - STEP 1

The first step in Giclée printing is selecting the appropriate printer and substrate to best enhance your artwork. One of our expert printers will gladly help inform you how the different printers and papers will affect the output of your image.

During this process we will familiarize you with costs, sizing and curation concerns as well as possible stretching and framing options.

SCANNING PROCESS - STEP2

During the digitizing process, we capture the original artwork as a digital file. The original will be shot with our ZBE digital camera. Smaller pieces are scanned on a flatbed scanner to create the digital file. The ZBE camera is a digital camera back mated to a motorized zoom system. Its resolution is equivalent to a 40 mega-pixel digital camera. Exposure and perspective are strictly controlled to ensure your original is kept sharp and the proportions true from the beginning of the digital workflow.

When an original is unavailable, we can create a print from a transparency, a slide, or a pre-existing digital file. All scans are done at an output resolution of 300 dots per inch or greater using specific scanner and printer profiles to optimize data.

PREPRESS PROCESS - STEP3

During the prepress process the digital file is prepared for printing. This involves color correcting the file to produce an accurate reproduction of the original artwork. Proofs are approximately 8" x 10" in size, and are created to check the final output for color accuracy on the chosen printer and substrate. This process is highly recommended.

PRINTING PROCESS - STEP4

We use IRIS, Roland, and Epson printers for our Giclée prints. The IRIS printer is considered the highest quality printer available for fine art reproduction printing.

The Roland Hi-Fi Jet series was designed for use in the production of high quality, large-format fine art reproduction.

The recent Epson 9800 is a leap forward for consistency of color across long spans of time. The new K3 ink sets, coupled with special software, help gurantee color accuracy from one print to the next.

All canvas prints are treated with an archival latex ultra-violet coating for lasting protection. You may choose from a matte, glossy, or semi-gloss coating depending on your particular needs.
